Day Tours: Hobbiton Movie Set

Tours are $225 per person.

Not all who wander are lost. Relive the magic of the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit movie trilogies on a day trip to Hobbiton Movie Set, near Matamata. 

Hobbiton is the location that was transformed into the bustling hobbit township of the same name in Peter Jackson’s movie depictions of Middle-Earth. After filming finished Hobbiton lived on, allowing guests to explore 44 permanently reconstructed hobbit hole houses and other landmarks that featured in the movies’ famous hobbit village.   

Our guided tour includes transport to Hobbiton in our comfortable air-conditioned van, leaving from the Port of Tauranga, Tauranga city or nearby towns. Once at Hobbiton you will transfer to the Hobbiton bus where a Hobbiton Movie Set guide will provide expert commentary on the hobbit village and the secrets behind why Peter Jackson chose the Alexander farm in the heart of the Waikato as one of the central settings in his movies.  

During the tour you will enjoy free refreshments at the Green Dragon Inn – a favourite meeting place for hobbits – and have the chance to buy a souvenir or bite to eat at the Shires Rest Café.  

The return tour to Hobbiton also includes a visit to the beautiful McLaren Falls, just outside of Tauranga. This area is known for its waterfalls and birdlife, and was used as the movie set for the 2016 Disney movie Pete’s Dragon.
